Golf
Madeira is home to two
championship courses. Both offer stunning views in different ways: Palheiro
over the Bay of Funchal and gardens, and at 600 metres above sea level Santo
da Serra has views over the neighbouring islands and valleys below.
Is set 500m above sea level in the hills to the east of Funchal, with fantastic views over the bay and city. This 18 hole, par 72 course was designed in 1993 by Cable Robinson, and is skilfully set within the gracious parkland of the Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro. Remarkable for tight fairways, fast greens and judicious use of the beautiful trees that once covered the hillside, the course is a worthy challenge for all golfers. It boasts an excellent restaurant with first class cuisine and a large terrace with an unrivalled view.

Home of the
Madeira Island Open organised by the
P.G.A. European Tour, has been rated as one of the most spectacular
courses in Europe. Perched 500 metres above sea level, with staggering
views from the mountains to the sea below and surrounded by luxurious
vegetation. Designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in September 1991,
it offers 27 holes with generous fairways, tight undulating greens and
a choice of tee positions to suite all abilities. The clubhouse has been
completely renovated, with a large panoramic restaurant, ample changing
rooms, a gym, Turkish baths and a good training area.
